Bruce Buckland and Reinhardt Stritter have been fishing for many years in the annual Malindi Billfish Tournament, but prospects seemed a bit bleak after the first day when they had teamed up on Seahorse. With nothing to their credit, they watched the other boats displaying marlin and sailfish flags galore, but their luck changed on the second day, when skipper Pete Ready tried live baiting around the Centre Mlima area, and they boated two good black marlin, a 144kg capture by Bruce and a 110 kg fish from Reinhardt, as well as tagging two sail. Both marlin were one of a double strike, showing there are plenty of black marlin around.
This gave them the points needed to better the two tagged marlin and four sail on Clueless, with Ian Fenton and Rob Duff fishing, to take the top award. Snowgoose was third, and 14 marlin and 41 sailfish was the total of the fourteen boats entered, while the biggest fish was a black marlin of 186 kgs on Neptune, a very nice fish indeed which sounds more impressive at 410 lbs!
With the current running south, there are fish both off Malindi and around the Watamu Banks all the way out to the Rips. Ol Jogi hit the jackpot, when they found a black marlin early fishing out towards the Rips, and another and a stripey while moving home, which together with three sailfish gave Peter Atterbury from UK a memorable day, The same day B's Nest tagged seven sail and White Bear five for Les Moxon who has had a terrific fishing holiday, with seven sail earlier then a 250 kg blue marlin tagged and released on the same boat with skipper Jackson Safari.
